We value and respect the historic aspect of the barn.

The original “nerd herd,” left to right: Holly, Julia, and Sarah with a local architect

holly, julia, steve, and sarahHolly, Julia, and Sarah love learning and history. They met at a park a few years ago.

Holly founded the Facebook group, “Save the Maplenol Dairy Barn at Valley High School” in early January 2011. She successfully coordinated the research and write-up of a Site Inventory for the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for the Maplenol Barn. It was accepted; the SHPO stated that the barn is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

Sarah has photographed the Maplenol Barn multiple times and published her images online. The images have appeared in Preservation Nation, a publication of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She believes that historic places have value.

Julia lives in West Des Moines and put the Maplenol Barn in the non-Facebook arenas of her personal Twitter account and this blog as a way to increase awareness. She loves that the Maplenol Barn is on public property and close to the road for all to see.
